File server migration from physical to virtual

Technology Lead, Infosys Limited (July 2013 to October 2022)

Moved physical Windows file servers onto virtual machines on VMware vSphere as part of the data centre consolidation.

The problem

File services ran on physical servers that took space, power and maintenance, and were harder to protect than virtual machines.

What I did

Each file server was moved to a virtual machine on VMware vSphere, with cutover planned inside change windows so users kept access to their shares.

The result

File services run on the virtual platform with the rest of the estate, on less physical hardware.
